About Hanifaru Bay UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

Hanifaru Bay UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

Hanifaru Bay, located in the Baa Atoll of the Maldives, is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve revered for its unique underwater spectacle. This area is one of the world's leading manta ray feeding locations, drawing enthusiasts and researchers alike. From May to November, hundreds of manta rays and whale sharks gather to feast on the zooplankton concentrated by strong currents and plankton blooms. The bay, encompassing approximately 1600 meters, is a strictly regulated area to protect its rich biodiversity, including vibrant coral reefs and a multitude of marine species. The reserve does not allow diving, limiting activities to snorkeling to minimize human impact on the delicate ecosystem. Established within a community aligned with sustainable tourism practices, Hanifaru Bay offers visitors a rare glimpse into the subtle dance of marine giants while fostering conservation awareness.
